Ibrahima Konate and the outstanding Nat Phillips – who produced a Cruyff turn in his own area in the second half – never put a foot out of place but the one moment there was a drop off, Milan scored the goal that got the home crowd roaring. Much of what they did ended up down dead ends. For all that Liverpool dominated possession in the opening exchanges, it was always going to be a difficult to sustain it from start to finish, as the onus was on Milan – hollered on by the raucous Curva Sud ultras – to step up and give themselves a chance.
